Jets Center Competition Heats Up Between Josh Myers and Joe Tipman

Initially, Joe Tipman might have been taken aback by the competitive atmosphere, but Josh Myers was well aware of the challenge awaiting him when he joined the Jets. Myers, who previously played at Ohio State and started in 60 games over the last four seasons—playoffs included—signed a one-year, $2 million deal in March, a move that surprised him during the free agency period.

The rivalry between Myers and the incumbent Tipman has quickly become a notable highlight of training camp. “I’m just concentrating on what I can control. Worrying about competition isn’t really productive,” Myers mentioned after the Jets completed their third training session. “Being mentally prepared is key; show up ready to give your best each day. It’s really all about taking it one step at a time.”

Myers has a shared history with Tipman, having played alongside him at Ohio State, where they developed a certain connection. There’s an interesting dynamic in their competition; while the full effects of it might not emerge until later in the season, Tipman has shared that he’s excited about the challenge and that their relationship is solid.

Ultimately, Myers must secure the starting position to establish that connection on the field after week one. Drawing from his experiences playing with Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love in Green Bay, he’s motivated to make a statement—particularly after feeling overlooked in free agency.

When addressed about his free agency journey on Friday, Myers was nonchalant, saying, “What is it?” He expressed contentment with how everything turned out, emphasizing the trust he placed in his agents and the coaching staff, noting, “It seemed like everything fell into place.”

Regarding other players, Glenn praised rookie Mason Taylor’s blocking skills but pointed out his overall uniqueness, saying, “His skills, especially with blocking, are impressive.” Meanwhile, rookie Right Tackle Armand Membou will begin camp alongside Will McDonald IV, who made a notable impact with his performance last season, having collected 10.5 sacks.

In another piece of news, the Jets are poised to debut rival uniforms against the Dolphins on December 28, as part of a partnership with NFL’s Nike.

Interestingly, WWE’s Sheamus made an appearance during the Jets’ practice session on Friday.
