Travis Kelce’s Contract Insights
Details of Travis Kelce’s contract have finally come to light.
During the offseason, Kelce pondered the idea of retiring, but just last week, he opted to sign a one-year, $12 million deal to continue with the Chiefs for his 14th season in the NFL.
This contract is fully guaranteed, but interestingly, $9 million of it is tied up in roster bonuses. Of this, $3 million is a training camp bonus, while the remaining $6 million hinges on him being named to the 90-man roster at a specific time in the season. So, even if he’s not actively playing, he’s likely to make a good chunk of that money.
Kansas City also added incentives amounting to $3 million, which are tied to playoff appearances, the Super Bowl, and playing between 60 to 80 percent of regular-season snaps. If those targets are hit, the contract structure will split in 2026, featuring a cap hit of $4.8 million and $3.5 million in dead money over the upcoming two years.
This arrangement gives the Chiefs a strategic edge, allowing them to avoid any long-term hiatus with Kelce. They’ve built in a minimum salary for dummy years in 2027 and 2028, including a guaranteed $40 million in 2028, should he still be part of the roster by June 8 next year. But if the team opts to release him before June 1, 2027, they can manage the dead money more effectively.
While Kelce has chosen to keep playing this year, with his 37th birthday approaching next season, this could signal a potential path toward retirement down the line.
Kelce played 17 games last season, finishing with 851 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Though he fell short of the 1,000-yard milestone for the third consecutive year, he still earned a Pro Bowl selection for the 11th year running.
Drafted in the third round in 2013, his remarkable stats include 1,080 receptions for 13,002 yards and 84 total touchdowns throughout his impressive 13-year career.
His return is significant for the Chiefs, especially considering they ended 2025 with a disappointing 6-11 record and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014. The injury to Patrick Mahomes, who tore his ACL in Week 15 against the Chargers, certainly didn’t help, sidelining him for the final three games of the season.
As Mahomes prepares to make a comeback next season, Kelce will be right by his side as the Chiefs aim to reclaim their previous dominance.
