Complete Text of the New Pope’s Initial Public Speech

Vatican City:

This marks the initial address from Pope Leo XIV, delivered from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Cathedral shortly after his election as the new Pope and leader of the Catholic Church.

“You’re welcome to join us!

Dear brothers and sisters, this is the first greeting from our resurrected Christ, the good shepherd who nurtures His flock. I aim to extend this message of peace to your hearts, to your families, to everyone, everywhere, and indeed to the entire world. Being together with you signifies peace!

This peace comes from the resurrected Christ—unarmed, humble, and patient. It is bestowed by God, who loves us unconditionally. We still resonate with the brave voice of Pope Francis, who blessed Rome!

The blessing he offered to Rome that Easter morning extends to the whole world.

Embrace that same blessing. God watches over us, loves us, and evil will not prevail! We are all in God’s hands, so let us not be afraid and work hand in hand with God and within ourselves to forge ahead.

We are Christ’s disciples. He leads the way. The world is in need of His light, and humanity needs Him as a bridge to reach God and His love.

Please assist us in building a bridge of unity through dialogue, encounters, and harmony, ensuring that we remain one people in peace. Thank you, Pope Francis!

I also wish to express gratitude to all the fellow cardinals who have chosen to accompany you, the successor of Peter. The united church continually seeks peace and justice.

I am a son of St. Augustine, and like Augustine said, “With you, I am a Christian and a bishop for you.” In this spirit, we can journey together toward the homeland God has prepared for us.

A warm greeting to the Roman Church! We must seek ways to be missionary churches—bridges that foster dialogue. Let’s be welcoming, just like this square.

(Switching to Spanish) I wish to share my faith and remain loyal to Jesus Christ, allowing me to greet my cherished parish in Peru, where all people, especially the faithful, have accompanied their bishops.

(Returning to Italian) To our brothers and sisters in Rome, Italy, and the world, we aspire to be a church that moves forward, a church that perpetually seeks peace and charity.

Today is a special day dedicated to Our Lady of Pompeii. Mother Mary desires to accompany us, always close to us, supporting us with her love and intercession.

Thus, I want us to pray together. Let us unite in prayer for this new mission of the church and for peace across the globe.
