Kennedy Center Honors Military Families with Concert
On Thursday evening, the Kennedy Center is celebrating military personnel, veterans, and their families with a special patriotic event. The National Symphony Orchestra is hosting a sold-out concert titled “Notes of Honor: NSO Salutes Troops”, aimed at recognizing the sacrifices made by those in the armed forces.
This annual memorial service is a cherished tradition at the Kennedy Center. It will feature vocalist Melinda Doolittle, an orchestral performance, and several iconic patriotic pieces. Attendees are encouraged to stand as military songs play, including the stirring notes of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” creating a moving atmosphere in Washington, D.C.
This concert comes at a time when many military families are dealing with the challenges of deployments, financial stress, and time apart during the holiday season. Organizers at the Kennedy Center noted that this year’s focus on joy and American pride is a response to the unique struggles faced by these families.
Tickets for the event were offered free to active duty military, veterans, and former service members, with many redeeming vouchers using valid military identification. The demand was so great that the event quickly sold out.
Melinda Doolittle shared her feelings about the experience with Fox News, saying, “Singing for U.S. troops around the world has been one of the most meaningful parts of my career. We’ve met families who have made incredible sacrifices, and service members whose bravery inspires long after the music fades. It’s an honor to be part of this concert and to show a little gratitude for what they deserve.”
The Kennedy Center’s intent for this event is straightforward: to create a memorable evening specifically for the families who defend our country. This concert also marks a notable military tribute coinciding with President Donald Trump’s return to the White House.
Interestingly, President Trump, the first Kennedy Center chairman in history, has been involved in supporting the venue, contributing funds through an initiative dubbed the “One, Big Beautiful Bill.”
Principal conductor Steven Reineke expressed his appreciation for the tradition, stating, “The annual Notes of Honor Holiday Concert is one of my favorite traditions at the National Symphony Orchestra. It fills me with gratitude to be able to give back, even in a small way, to these courageous individuals and their families.” He emphasized how special it is to celebrate the holiday spirit with them, particularly for those who have spent it away from their loved ones.
The “Notes of Honor” has developed into an important part of the Kennedy Center’s December offerings, creating an occasion where the majority of the audience consists of military families. This year’s event is backed by the National Symphony Orchestra and supported by aerospace and defense company RTX, ensuring the concert remains free for military members.
