Conan O’Brien Critiques Political Comedy’s Focus

Comedian Conan O’Brien recently voiced his concerns about the state of political comedy, particularly regarding its focus on President Donald Trump. In an interview with the Oxford Union, O’Brien remarked that many comics have traded humor for outrage, only shouting about Trump rather than delivering genuine laughter.

O’Brien argued that Trump’s unpredictable style makes him a challenging target for satire. The constant barrage of criticism against the President, he said, often detracts from comedic value. He feels that some comedians approach their material with an angry, repetitive mantra of “F. Trump,” which, he believes, diminishes their comedic effectiveness. “You’ve sacrificed the biggest weapon—humor—for anger,” he noted.

He went on to suggest that humor should always remain a priority, regardless of the seriousness of the situation. “There’s always a way to be funny, even when things are tough,” he said. He underscored the idea that good art is a powerful tool against authority but cautioned against mere shouting and anger, asserting that these approaches can undermine what makes comedy impactful.

While O’Brien expressed strong political opinions throughout the discussion, he hesitated when it came to the role of comedians in political discourse, referring to it as a “difficult” subject. He mentioned that while he holds strong views, he’s careful not to let those shape his comedy entirely.

In a light-hearted jab, he also mocked Trump’s ambitions for a ballroom, joking about demolishing parts of the White House to make way for a new Mar-a-Lago. O’Brien has previously critiqued modern political comedy for focusing more on labeling Trump as “boring” rather than being genuinely funny.

Reflecting on the broader impact of Trump’s actions, he argued that the January 6th incident was just a minor footnote compared to the lasting effects Trump had on comedic art, claiming, “I really want to say here that this is his biggest sin.” O’Brien believes that Trump’s outlandish behavior has forever changed the landscape of political comedy.
