Conflict Breaks Out Among Maine Democrats and Graham Platner's Campaign

Recent allegations against Graham Platner, the Democratic U.S. Senate candidate from Maine, have ignited significant internal conflict within the party.

Despite previous support for Platner through various controversies, Democratic leaders have reconsidered their backing after a woman accused him of breaking into her home and sexually assaulting her. This has led to the withdrawal of support from prominent figures like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Rep. Ro Khanna.

Initially, Platner mentioned he would “consider the best path forward for the state and the people I care about,” but his campaign has so far resisted the intensifying pressure.

Currently, the Maine Democratic Party has accused his campaign of attempting to manipulate the succession process and is urging Platner to step down.

“The Maine Democratic Party is working diligently to establish a fair, open, and transparent process for selecting a replacement Senate candidate. The integrity of this process is crucial, and we are determined to ensure that all Democrats statewide are confident in it,” stated Devon Murphy Anderson, Executive Director of the Maine Democratic Party, in a video message.

“Unfortunately, Mr. Platner’s team has contacted us several times to grasp the process,” she added.

“We’ve made it clear to them that they have no say in determining the next Democratic nominee or in shaping the nomination process,” she emphasized.

Platner’s campaign manager, Ben Chin, expressed frustration through a text message, indicating that the Maine Democratic Party seemed to be sidelining him from discussions about a replacement candidate.

“Instead of involving us, the Maine Democratic Party allowed the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to plan a potential nomination process in secret. Our teams, volunteers, and supporters have been entirely excluded,” Chin said.

“I firmly believe that those who supported this movement deserve a real role in the nomination process,” he continued, stressing the need to heed the perspectives of those who contributed to the movement.

However, the Maine Democratic Party countered, accusing Platner’s campaign of making “false accusations” that distract from the primary goal of defeating incumbent Sen. Susan Collins. They clarified that Platner’s supporters would indeed be able to participate in the nomination process.

“While the Platner campaign continues to distract from the mission of defeating Collins with these unfounded claims, the Maine Democratic Party is focused on creating a representative and transparent process for selecting a new candidate if necessary,” Murphy-Anderson stated in a post on the party’s X account.

“Even though we are frustrated with Graham Platner’s attempts to manipulate the situation, we appreciate his supporters, who play a crucial role in our party and should be included in the public process for selecting his successor,” she noted.

It’s worth mentioning that Platner secured the Maine primary with 72.1 percent of the votes, totaling 156,084 supporters.
