Experiences with Haunted Houses
For many, the idea of ghost houses comes across as just folklore, something seen in films or on TV. Naturalists and certain religious groups often dismiss the notion that homes—or the people within them—can be haunted.
However, for those who’ve encountered unexplained phenomena, the experience can feel all too real and, frankly, frightening. It’s surprisingly common, but most individuals might not realize it.
Interestingly, a 2022 YouGov poll revealed that about one in four Americans believes they’ve lived in a haunted house. Additionally, there’s a plethora of YouTube videos recording such paranormal activities. Yet, amid this fascination, there’s also a vast amount of questionable advice on how to deal with unwanted spiritual activity at home.
From a Christian viewpoint, I’d like to share some insights on what to do based on my experiences in haunted homes—though I would caution against taking the wrong steps.
Understanding the Spiritual Realm
First off, it’s important to clarify that the phenomena people describe can range widely. Some might just feel an occasional, harmless presence, which, well, is unsettling but manageable.
On the other hand, I’ve dealt with much more intense encounters characterized by alarming, often violent occurrences. Think of things like strange noises, unexplained voices, bad smells, sudden chills, moving objects, shadowy figures, and, in some cases, even physical confrontations. These experiences can really shake you up.
I believe that these distressing episodes often stem from demonic forces. While it’s possible for some human spirits to linger or appear on Earth—maybe even those of souls who have not found redemption—these experiences that cause fear and mental anguish? Well, they align more often with Satan’s influence, in my opinion, resonating with biblical teachings and narratives from Christian practitioners in this area.
Avoiding Wrong Approaches
If you find yourself in such a situation, it’s crucial to reach out to people you trust. Yes, there’s a risk of being labeled as “crazy” or “just seeking attention”. But letting the devil isolate you from supportive friends and family is exactly what he wants. So, talk about what you’re experiencing with those you believe can help—particularly mature Christians or religious leaders.
Conversely, avoid talking to just anyone about it, especially many paranormal investigators or articles authored by non-Christian sources. Some are outright frauds, while others—despite good intentions—lack the means to genuinely assist you. They might bring out devices to capture evidence but don’t offer true solutions for those grappling with demonic forces. Often, these groups include self-proclaimed psychics whose advice could mislead you.
For instance, when a medium was invited to tackle the case surrounding the infamous Annabelle doll, they spun a tale that the doll housed the spirit of a deceased child. This was a ploy to garner sympathy, inadvertently granting that spirit permission to inhabit the doll.
Instead, speak with a trusted pastor or a spiritually strong Christian who can genuinely help you combat these issues. Non-Christian viewpoints can offer a barrage of misguided explanations, whereas those deeply grounded in biblical understanding have the tools to assist you.
Steps Toward Resolution
I previously mentioned the importance of consulting with Christian ministers, but note that not all pastors will be receptive. Some might not believe in the devil’s existence at all, seeing him as merely allegorical or an artifact of superstition. Others may shy away from engaging with such frightening realities, often lacking appropriate training. There’s also the concern that involving the devil could tarnish their congregation’s reputation.
This could lead you to consult multiple pastors before finding someone willing to help.
The objective is clear: you need a biblically sound, spiritually mature pastor to come and bless your home, effectively driving out malevolent forces. This typically involves prayer, reading scripture, and sometimes using holy water or anointing oils to affirm Christ’s authority in expelling the evil present. Often, multiple visits and blessings will be necessary to fully cleanse the space.
If a pastor can’t assist, dedicated, spiritually mature Christians can step in as well. But this is a serious undertaking, and anyone involved should be prepared for a mental struggle and potential backlash in their lives.
One key step is to identify why you or your family is under attack.
In many instances, these intrusions result from an “open door,” effectively giving the devil the green light to proceed with his work. Frequently, these doors open through occult activities—things that the Bible explicitly forbids (like rifling through Deuteronomy 18:10-12). Two Christians working in this field have noted that up to 70% of their cases involved individuals using Ouija boards.
Sometimes, though, you may not see a clear reason for a specific family’s targeted attack. If occult influences are present, anyone involved should seek God’s forgiveness and dispose of any questionable items.
Ultimately, lasting freedom from the devil comes only through a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ. This requires acknowledging one’s sins against God and accepting the redemptive sacrifice made on the cross (as referenced in 1 Peter 2:24). It’s also vital to allow Jesus to take the lead in your life (Luke 9:23-24).
One core reason for Christ’s arrival was to “destroy the devil’s work” (1 John 3:8). He seeks to draw people out of darkness and into His glorious light (Colossians 1:13). Those who follow Christ are empowered to “overcome all the powers of the enemy” (Luke 10:19).
Even though Christians may encounter significant spiritual battles, victory comes through Christ (Ephesians 6:11-13).
