Confusion in DC police leadership leads to social media ridicule

Backlash Against DC Police Chief Following Press Conference

In Washington, DC, Prime Minister Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department has stirred up considerable social media criticism after struggling to interpret media inquiries about the “chain of orders” in her department amidst President Donald Trump’s recent actions regarding law enforcement.

During a press conference on Tuesday morning, a reporter asked, “Can you tell me what the chain of command is now?” Smith seemed unclear, responding with, “What does that mean?” The reporter pressed on, asking, “Is that Pam Bondi talking to the mayor? Is it you? How does this work?” Trump interjected, elaborating on the chain of command while referencing Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rules Act, which allows him to take managerial control of the capital’s police.

FBI Director Kash Patel backed Trump’s move to oversee the DC police, stating, “When you make a good cop a police officer, they deliver.”

This exchange unfolded after a meeting with Attorney General Pam Bondi. Trump noted that while the organizational structure and funding methods for police remain intact, Bondi is operating as a “proxy” under the federalization order, indicating they are in frequent contact.

Some leading House Republicans have commented that Trump’s takeover of the DC police is “rightly” done, insisting that Mayor Bowser and others need to testify about the city’s crime situation.

Smith appeared to be genuinely perplexed about the concept of the department’s “chain of orders.” The reaction was notably swift on social media, with conservative users expressing disbelief. One popular conservative account quipped, “This is why Dei is sick,” referring to the governance of the police.

Smith previously held the position of Chief Equity Officer in the division, according to her biography.

Critics pointed out that, despite her previous role, Smith’s apparent lack of understanding about core police management principles raised concerns. Comments included a mix of astonishment and mockery, with many highlighting the troubling implications of her misunderstanding.

Fox Digital has reached out to both the Metropolitan Police Department and Mayor Bowser’s office for comments regarding the incident and the ensuing backlash, but no replies have been received as of yet.

Trump announced the federal oversight of the DC Police Department in response to a series of violent events in the city, including the fatal shootings of a council intern and an Israeli embassy staff member, among others.

He described the current state of Washington as overrun by violent gangs and criminals, emphasizing the need to reclaim the capital. Declaring it “D.C.’s liberation day,” Trump asserted that measures would be taken to restore order, citing the federal powers granted to him as president.

“I’m officially invoking section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rules Act and placing the DC Metropolitan Police under direct federal control,” he stated, promising to deploy National Guard troops to support law enforcement effectively.
