Texas Lawmakers Address Rising Threat of Nitazene
Texas Representative August Pflueger is spearheading a bipartisan initiative aimed at tackling nitazene, a dangerous illegal drug that poses a greater risk than fentanyl, according to Blaze News.
Pflueger, alongside his co-sponsor Rep. Michael Baumgartner from Washington and Democratic Rep. Eugene Vindman from Virginia, introduced the House version of the Nitazene Act detection bill on Thursday. This bipartisan measure seeks to allocate resources from the Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate and the Drug Enforcement Administration to improve detection capabilities for very low concentrations of illicit drugs like nitazene.
“These deadly drugs are costing American lives,” Pflueger remarked to Blaze News. He articulated concerns about the lack of attention given to nitazene, emphasizing its newness as a class of illegal drugs threatening public health and safety. “By speeding up and enhancing the identification of these agents, the DETECT Nitazenes Act aims to fill essential gaps in detection capabilities, supporting law enforcement and enhancing public safety.”
He added, “As the dangers from synthetic drugs advance, this legislation makes sure we are equipped to deal with the next wave of deadly substances and safeguard our communities.”
Republican Senator Eric Schmitt from Missouri, who is backing a corresponding bill in the Senate, highlighted the peril posed by nitazene, urging Congress to take swift action. “Nitazene is a formidable synthetic opioid that’s more potent than fentanyl, cheaper to produce, and incredibly lethal,” Schmitt told Blaze News. “These drugs are claiming lives, which means we need to be proactive before they wreak havoc in Missouri and beyond.”
Schmitt expressed pride in introducing the Nitazene Detection Act in the Senate and expressed optimism about its reception in the House, urging both chambers to advance this crucial legislation swiftly to control this emerging crisis.
