Congressional candidate Lukas Ventouras found to have liked posts with anti-Jewish sentiment

Long Island Congressional Candidates Face Backlash Over Social Media Posts

In Suffolk County, the political scene is heating up, especially for candidate Lucas Venturas, whose social media activity is raising eyebrows. He has been favoriting posts from an Instagram account that derides the Jewish community, particularly referring to it as “hamptons slums.” This account, active for about a year, features content that mocks both Jewish celebrities and the Israel Defense Forces, tapping into fears about rising anti-Semitism.

At 25, Venturas is gearing up to take on Chris Gallant, 36, in the upcoming Democratic primary scheduled for June 23rd. The district, which includes northern Suffolk County and the bustling East End of Long Island, has a significant Jewish population looking for representation.

Back in May, Venturas reacted to a controversial post from comedian Jerry Seinfeld, which was deemed inappropriate by locals. The post jokingly suggested using Palestinian human organs as dental floss. The response from the community? A strong sense of violation, with residents expressing feeling as if they had been “punched in the gut.”

Residents are concerned about Venturas’ apparent support for this type of rhetoric, with one local commenting, “It feels like he empathizes with these horrifying anti-Semitic posts.” Others echoed this sentiment, seeing his social media likes as a potential endorsement of anti-Semitic attitudes.

Furthermore, during a recent debate among law school students, Venturas attracted criticism for “liking” posts that malign Israel, implying that they rest on harmful anti-Semitic stereotypes. His official campaign account also reflects similar sentiments, as he seems to target local Democrats with caustic remarks about their stance on various issues, including war and healthcare.

“As a Jew living in the Hamptons, I utterly condemn this candidate’s despicable anti-Semitic actions,” expressed Mitchell Agous, a supporter of Republican incumbent Nick LaRota. Many shared similar feelings, viewing Venturas’ social media activity as nothing short of appalling.

Interestingly, Venturas identifies as a “first-generation American.” His grandfather fled the Greek civil war years ago with dreams of the American Dream. Yet, critics argue that this background does not absolve him of accountability in his current political campaign.

Local residents are left to wonder about the implications of his likes and comments. If he feels comfortable engaging with such inflammatory content online, they worry about what might be happening elsewhere on the internet.

The controversy extends beyond Venturas, drawing in his rival, Chris Gallant, who has also interacted with questionable posts referencing an “Israel lobby.” Community members are concerned that anti-Semitic rhetoric is being normalized, with the candidate’s ties to controversial figures further complicating the political landscape.

In response to the uproar, the individual running the “hamptons slums” account, Joseph Charles Mollica, has doubled down, making disparaging comments about Jews and asserting his anti-Israel stance publicly. Meanwhile, Venturas has yet to comment on the growing scrutiny of his social media actions.

As the primary approaches, the dynamics in Long Island politics seem to be shifting, with many anxiously awaiting how these events will unfold.
