Connecticut Republicans have criticized a Democratic state education official for what they describe as a “chilled response” on social media regarding the death of Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA. They shared a screenshot that seemed to originate from Farmington School Board Chairman Bill Beckert, which included a comment stating, “They will reap what they sowed.”
Ben Proto, the Chairman of the Connecticut Republicans, expressed disappointment over Beckert’s behavior. He indicated that a person in Beckert’s position should exhibit restraint and decency. He characterized Beckert’s comments as celebrating the tragic deaths of two young men and their father, suggesting that their only misstep was holding a certain opinion. Proto described this reaction as grotesque and a betrayal of the values that should guide educators and public servants.
Proto remarked that Kirk’s beliefs were grounded in faith and a love for the country, and that he never encouraged violence. He also accused Beckert of trying to silence dissenting voices, stating that Beckert’s words appeared to endorse political violence. Proto urged parents and taxpayers in Farmington to consider if this is the kind of example they want for their children.
He added that Farmington deserves leadership that teaches students to resolve conflicts through dialogue, not violence, emphasizing that Charlie Kirk embodied that principle. The community, he noted, needs to reflect on the lessons they wish to impart in their schools.
Meanwhile, in Florida, a teacher allegedly faced suspension for sharing a post that expressed a sentiment close to mourning. The Florida Education Commissioner, Anastasios Camoutes, announced an investigation into teachers who may have engaged in behavior deemed inappropriate in relation to Kirk’s death. It seems the ongoing discussions around this topic are stirring quite a few different reactions.
