Tragic Incident in Connecticut

A young man in Connecticut has been accused of killing his mother with a hammer before fleeing into the nearby woods, reportedly shouting “Mommy!”

On October 24, police took 20-year-old Sebastian Van Stockum into custody after he confessed to fatally attacking his mother, Laura Williams, 55, in their $2 million home located in New Canaan, roughly 10 miles from Stamford.

Authorities responded to a call around 10:36 p.m. about a man in the woods yelling for his mother, and they also received a distressing call from Van Stockum admitting he had “killed his mother.”

Upon arrival at the residence, officers found Van Stockum at the door, covered in blood. He was quickly handcuffed.

The police later discovered Williams outside the house with serious head injuries, including a fractured skull. A bloody hammer was found on the grass nearby.

Despite paramedics’ efforts at CPR, she was declared dead at the scene due to her injuries.

Investigators also noted a considerable pool of blood in the driveway close to where her body lay. Van Stockum, while being restrained, reportedly acknowledged his actions, confessing to taking his mother’s life.

Family members mentioned that he was not in a good mental state during the incident, with one relative stating he “tried to use a knife, he tried to use a hammer, he tried to use his fists.”

Van Stockum was subsequently taken to the New Canaan Police Headquarters and charged with murder. A police mugshot depicted him with blood on his face and several scratches.

The Chief Medical Examiner determined that Williams died from blunt force trauma to the head, classifying the death as a homicide.

During a court appearance in Stamford on Monday, State’s Attorney Paul Ferencek described the murder as “particularly violent,” highlighting the severe trauma Williams endured.

Defense attorney Philip Russell, present at the bail hearing, reflected on the shocking nature of the event, stating, “This was a terrible shock… It’s too early for anyone to rush to judgment. Obviously, this is a tragic situation.”

Van Stockum’s bail was set at $2 million, with his next court date scheduled for November 3.

His father, Dirk Van Stockum, a local restaurateur, attended the hearing but did not comment on the case.

According to relatives, Van Stockum had spent time living with his maternal grandmother in Virginia, but it “just didn’t work out,” as stated by his uncle, David Williams.

Laura Williams had an interesting background; she grew up in Charlottesville, Virginia, was a skilled writer and artist, and had worked briefly in film production. She graduated from Georgetown University in 1993.

If convicted, Sebastian Van Stockum could face a minimum sentence of 25 years behind bars.
