Conor McDavid faces some serious questions about his future after the Oilers fell to the Panthers in the Stanley Cup final for the second consecutive year.
As he approaches the final year of his $12.5 million contract, there’s a buzz in the NHL about whether the superstar can lead Edmonton to victory. At 28, he’s closer than ever for the Oilers, but is he feeling uncertain about staying with the team?
If McDavid is fully dedicated to Edmonton, a significant contract extension could be on the horizon. Conversely, if he has reservations, the possibility of a trade looms large, making it essential for the Oilers to not lose such a valuable player for nothing.
ESPN’s Steve Levy noted this week that, “Windows are kind of closing.” During the “Jim Rome Show,” he added that it’s not just about McDavid’s age but particularly about his contract situation. The narrative suggests that if he can’t secure a championship this year, he might explore other options.
For the Oilers, it’s a precarious situation; allowing him to hit free agency without any compensation for one of the league’s elite would be a costly mistake.
After a tough game-six loss to Florida, a visibly frustrated McDavid shared his thoughts on what went wrong in the series, acknowledging the Panthers’ effective forecheck. “They tilted the rink. They were on top of us everywhere. You can’t create momentum; it felt like we were just slamming our heads against the wall. They earned their win,” he explained.
In the playoffs, McDavid has matched teammate Leon Draisaitl with seven goals and 26 assists over 22 games, leading the postseason with 33 points alongside Draisaitl.
Draisaitl, aged 29, has secured a five-year deal worth $14 million annually.
Meanwhile, Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk alluded to a shift in McDavid’s circumstances, hinting at the inevitability of his future success. “When you have that level of talent, he’s bound to win a Stanley Cup sooner or later, no matter where he plays,” Tkachuk said.
During the regular season, McDavid notched an impressive 100 points, consisting of 26 goals and 74 assists, over 67 games.
