Conor McGregor Starts Online Petition to Appear on Irish Presidential Ballot

Conor McGregor’s Presidential Ambitions

Conor McGregor is looking to step into a new arena—this time, the realm of ideas. The former UFC champion has initiated an online petition on change.org, aiming to rally his supporters from Ireland and across the globe to include him in the presidential election of Ireland.

“I, Conor McGregor, declare my intention to seek the esteemed position of President of Ireland,” he proclaimed in the petition launched on Monday. He expressed that current constitutional regulations pose a significant obstacle to democratic involvement.

He notes that aspiring candidates must receive nominations from either 20 members of the Oireachtas or from four county councils to qualify for a spot on the ballot. While this system aims to ensure some political representation, it inadvertently restricts the voice of the Irish electorate.

“Given this situation, I propose a petition that advocates for a revision of the nomination process to include my name on the ballot. I believe there should be a clear right, both at home and abroad, to choose the candidates for the presidential vote,” he emphasized, highlighting the importance of giving the Irish people agency in shaping their future.

Despite his enthusiasm, McGregor acknowledges the major hurdles he faces. According to Irish law, a candidate must be an Irish citizen, at least 35 years old, and must be nominated. This means he needs the backing of the Oireachtas members or councils—or he could try to run as a former president, should he have been one.

His approach seems ambitious, maybe even a long shot. Will this petition spark any real change in the political landscape of Ireland? It’s hard to say. As of now, the petition has garnered over 9,300 signatures.
