Conservative Group Responds by Filing Complaint Against Ethics Official Probing Ed Martin

Disciplinary Action Against DOJ Lawyer Sparks Controversy

Conservative groups voiced their concerns on Friday, suggesting that a lawyer at the Department of Justice may have acted unethically by selectively pursuing disciplinary measures against prominent DOJ officials.

Ed Martin, who currently serves as a pardon attorney, is under scrutiny due to a complaint related to a letter he sent while he was interim U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia. This letter reportedly cautioned Georgetown Law School that its hiring practices were impacted by the school’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

The Center for the Advancement of American Security (CASA) has filed a complaint against Martin, urging for an “immediate investigation.” They argue that the actions taken against him are politically motivated and seem to stem from his alignment with presidential goals.

The report states, “When a bar complaint resembles a partisan attack, it raises doubts about whether justice is being pursued fairly.” CASA’s statement emphasizes that the initiation of these disciplinary proceedings lacks merit and undermines the law’s integrity.

The complaint brings attention to the history of the disciplinary counsel, Hamilton P. “Phil” Fox III, highlighting his political donations, which include contributions to former President Barack Obama and other Democratic candidates during the 1990s and early 2000s.

Martin may face significant repercussions, such as disqualification, on grounds that involve “coercion to discipline or suppress dissent.” Although still in his role as a pardon attorney, he retired from the Weaponization Task Force earlier this year after his nomination to lead the D.C. District Attorney’s Office was unsuccessful.

In May 2025, Martin expressed his desire to investigate bar associations that he believes unfairly target conservative lawyers.

Following the news of the investigation, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche criticized the D.C. Bar Association as being overtly political. He remarked, “Thank God I’m not a member. Believe me, I’ll never be one.” The D.C. Bar did not respond to inquiries regarding this matter.

Recently, the Justice Department proposed new protocols to curb the “weaponization” of attorney complaints, ensuring that ethics complaints against DOJ lawyers are first examined by the attorney general, thereby pausing other investigations until this review is complete.

CASA’s Director James Fitzpatrick stated that Fox’s complaint against Martin seems to be retaliatory, targeting him for fulfilling his responsibilities as a federal employee aligned with the President’s objectives. Fitzpatrick called for a thorough investigation into Fox’s behavior and warned of potential consequences for any proven misconduct.
