Conservative House Republican urges GOP to remain firm on ObamaCare

Rep. Chip Roy, a Republican from Texas, urged his party not to hesitate regarding Obamacare amid the ongoing government shutdown and the Democrats’ focus on healthcare.

He mentioned that he’s been in Congress since 2019 and has been waiting for an opportunity to challenge the healthcare narrative for six years. In a piece released on Sunday titled, “This is Obamacare, there’s no time to wobble,” he expressed that Congress should not expand the Enhanced Obamacare Subsidies that were set up during the pandemic.

Roy argued that the pandemic has ended, and there’s no reason for Republicans to stray from their stance. He emphasized that the party needs to demonstrate their commitment to medical freedom and opposition to socialized healthcare.

Last week, the federal government shut down when Congressional leaders failed to agree on a spending bill. Lawmakers have been at odds about the next steps.

Democratic senators did not support a funding bill passed by the House, which would have extended the Affordable Care Act (ACA) grants due to run out in December. They’re also seeking to restore Medicaid funds that were trimmed in a Trump-era budget bill from July.

Recent polling indicates that a significant number of Republicans, including supporters of the Trump administration, favor maintaining ACA taxes, which are crucial in the current budget standoff.

Mark Short, who served as chief of staff to former Vice President Mike Pence, predicted on Sunday that the GOP might extend ACA subsidies to avert the shutdown under pressure from Democrats.

He remarked, “Unfortunately, I think the Republicans are likely to go along with this. The Democrats were quite strategic in including Obamacare subsidies in their plans.” Short noted that rising healthcare costs are a concern, implying a shared responsibility between both parties regarding the issue of healthcare reform.
