Germany's conservative opposition leader Friedrich Merz won the country's election on Sunday, while the far-right Alternatives Deutscheland (AFD) party came in second despite profits.
Prime Minister Olaf Scholz admitted his defeat and called the election results “bitter.” The Associated Press reported.
Scholz's Social Democrats came third in the worst national elections in decades.
With over 200 constituencies declared results, Reuters reported The Conservatives won 28.8% of the vote, while the AFD dragged 20.9%. The Social Democrats came in third place with 16.3%.
The AP said Germany is key to ongoing conversations in the region as it is the most populous country in the European Union and is the second largest arms supplier in particular in Ukraine.
The election was intended to occur in September, but after the US election in November, Scholz's economic issues forced the snap election.
As the country tackles migration, Mertz has placed a special emphasis on keeping it back down in recent weeks. The election also took place in Trump's closeness with Russian President Vladimir Putin and in Ukraine's side job as a side job at the Peace Conference, causing uncertainty in the region.
Vice President Vance recently met with AFD Head Alice Weidel. The meeting took place after Vance gave a speech. He said he believes that the biggest threat to Europe is censorship, not Russia or China.
