Conservatives win German election but far-right AfD doubles support | Germany

Conservative opponents won the most votes in the German general election, but the dramatic surge by far-right alternative Fut German Land (AFD) led Europe's response to an increasing global threat It could complicate the formation of governments to do so.

CDU/CSU candidate Friedrich Merz was preparing to form a dominant coalition on Sunday night after winning nearly 29% of votes from high votes.

“I want to express my respect for our political rivals,” he said, referring to his fellow centreists. “It was a very tough campaign.

“Now we need to talk to each other and form a government for Germany as quickly as possible. Germany will do the right thing at home, attend Europe again, and the world will once again have Germany once again. You can take action to confirm the government you can trust.”

The AFD has been supported by rage over immigration, violent crime and high energy costs, winning around 21% of the vote. He finished second and nearly doubled the results in the last election in 2021.

Party's jubilant prime minister candidate and co-leader; Alice Weidelcheered for the outcome of AFD officials, including the extremist Firebrand Björn Höcke, who was convicted of using the Nazi slogan “Alls für Deutschland” (all) that was banned in the campaign speech.

“This is a historic success for us. It's the best result we've ever had,” Weidel told broadcaster ARD. “We reach out to provide cooperation with CDU. Otherwise, change is impossible in Germany.”

However, all mainstream parties have made the “firewall” aside from formal cooperation with Donald Trump's confidant Elon Musk and the pro-immigrant pro-Kremlin AFD, an anti-immigrant who has gained well-received support from the US vice president. I pledged to maintain it. JD Vance is currently undergoing a short, intense campaign.

Trump welcomed the election results. “Like the US, Germans were tired of the common unconscious agenda, particularly on energy and immigration,” he wrote in a post on True Society. “This is a great day for Germany.”

But Meltz threw a dull tone, saying Trump “revealed” it. [his] The government is rather indifferent to the fate of Europe, and Germany will have to wait to see “whether we can still talk about NATO” when the alliance meets for the next summit in June Let's do.

“For me, the absolute priority is to strengthen Europe as quickly as possible, so in stages we can really achieve independence from the US on defense,” Meltz said.

He said on behalf of Kiev in Trump's attempts to eliminate him, perhaps along with “US Congress' intervention,” he did not give up hope that Ukraine would be included in future negotiations with Russia.

British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer congratulated Meltz and welcomed the opportunity to “strengthen our joint security.” “We look forward to working with the new government to deepen our already strong ties, increase joint security and bring growth to both countries,” Starmer wrote on X.

Congratulations to France President Emmanuel Macron. During this period of uncertainty, we are united to face major challenges in the world and our continent. ”

Incumbent Prime Minister Olaf Scholz has been his worst performance for Social Democrats since World War II, reaching around 16%. He led a three-way government until it collapsed in November on a dispute over spending priorities hours after Trump's reelection, and triggered a vote seven months before the schedule.

Sadascholz called it “a fierce outcome” and “defeat,” but struck a rebellious tone at the strength of the far right, saying it was “something that cannot be accepted.”

Voters also punished the Greens, Scholz junior partner who slipped three points to 11.6%, and the free-school Democrats in the pro business who failed to clear the 5% hurdle to Congressional expression.

Linke on the far left took over 8% after an incredibly late campaign comeback. Meanwhile, the new populist left Conservative, Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance, has been feeling sick after giving a strong show in European and state elections with a tally of less than 5% in European and state elections last year. .

Merz's conservatives, well below the majority, need to seek an alliance to govern, with the goal of introducing a new government by Easter. His most likely coalition partner is considered Social Democrats. According to the Spiegel projection of the seats, they should be only enough to form a majority together.

Weidel predicted that the tripartite coalition government under Mertz would be “unstable” and would “not survive for four years,” and that the AFD would be waiting on the wings at that point.

The AFD will become the biggest opposition even while being monitored by security officials as a suspected extremist force. Since its launch 12 years ago by a professor who was a sceptical euro skeptic, it has grown more radically.

It also aims directly towards Germany's tone sin culture against the Holocaust. In a TV debate last weekend, Weidel came from comments by one of the founders of AFD, who called the Nazi era “just a spot of bird poop in its successful history of over 1,000 years.” He explicitly refused to keep his distance.

A keen, popular corporate lawyer and veteran MP with no experience leading the government, Meltz faces a towering trey as the prime minister he's been following for decades.

Jumping the sputtering economy, tackling the collapse of transatlantic relations under Trump, and moving forward the path of besieged Ukraine, Germany as Europe seeks stronger leadership in a more unstable world. These are just some of the challenges facing.

News Weekly Die Zeit said that given the new global reality, Merz faces a “pile of mythical proportions problems.”

The mood of the campaign was significantly more severe than usual, with the sense that the rise of AFD was focusing on immigration at the expense of other pressing issues such as rising housing costs and the climate crisis.

Merz didn't mention the strong outcome of the AFD as he spoke to a party loyal to his party, but took a more reconciliatory tone with his left-leaning opponent than he had recently.

To voters, he added: I know it's not easy. ”

A series of fatal attacks with suspects from immigration backgrounds gave AFD Weidel Grist in search of fundamental changes in border policies, including the massive deportation of immigrants and German citizens.

The latest attack is said to have been reportedly said that prosecutors had planned to kill the Jews when Spanish tourists were stabbed at Berlin's Holocaust Memorial on Friday.

“Movement controls the campaign and from now on, the new government must find policies that are not compliant with German law, and will not undermine the EU. Guardian.

“But the biggest challenge for all is to form a stable coalition with the strength to reduce AFD to size.”

In the exit poll, AFD worked well among younger voters, winning 22% in the age bracket between 25 and 34 years old, with 18% ahead of CDU/CSU and 16% each. Merz's conservatives gave away a legion of support to the AFD compared to four years ago, but the SPD saw a major loss on the far right among the working class.

At the Munich Security Conference this month, Vance accused the “firewall” against AFD of undemocratic in its brave intervention in its campaign. His comments sparked a strong responsibility from Meltz. Meltz pledged to be far from the government he leads.

Mertz is the third largest German economy in the world by cutting corporate taxes while expressing openness to reform the strict “debt brake” that limits federal government's annual borrowing to 0.35% of GDP provided an action plan to revive the

However, any policy initiative must agree by potential partners on what is expected to become long-term coalition consultations.
