Fire Strikes South Bend Apartment Complex Under Construction

A significant fire erupted early Tuesday morning at an apartment complex being built in South Bend, Indiana, prompting the evacuation of residents from a nearby building, as reported by local officials.

The South Bend Fire Department mentioned that the blaze started shortly after midnight at the Stadium Flats apartments, located near S. Lafayette and W. South Street. Firefighters arrived to find dramatic flames and thick smoke, with reports indicating that the fire had engulfed both the construction site and a crane.

Despite the fire producing considerable embers and debris, crews managed to prevent it from spreading to the adjoining Diamond View Apartments. Residents there were evacuated, and officials noted that the intense heat caused damage to several windows on the top floor of the building, which contains 60 affordable housing units.

The Stadium Flats project was set to add 92 affordable units to downtown South Bend, and its completion had been anticipated by spring 2027. Luckily, fire crews were effective in safeguarding the adjacent 17,000-square-foot complex, which is situated near the training facility for the South Bend Cubs, the local minor league baseball team.

As for the fire’s origin, authorities have indicated that it is still under investigation, but thankfully, no injuries or fatalities have been reported. This incident took place not too far from the University of Notre Dame, roughly two miles away.
