The U.S. Consulate General in Tijuana has raised concerns about a potential terrorist attack involving explosives, which resulted in multiple explosions near the popular Playas de Tijuana beach. Meanwhile, Mexican officials have not provided any details regarding the incident that targeted the state police building.
This attack occurred just before 8 p.m. on Wednesday, when armed members of a cartel reportedly used drones to drop explosives on the Baja California Attorney General’s Office’s anti-kidnapping unit located in Playas de Tijuana. As reported by Mexican media outlet El Diario de Juarez, the drone strike was followed by gunfire. It remains unclear whether authorities were attempting to shoot down the drone or if cartel members fired during the incident.
During the chaos, the U.S. Consulate General took to social media and messaging platforms to alert American citizens about the ongoing situation, urging them to steer clear of the area.
In stark contrast, Mexican authorities did not issue any public warnings despite Playas de Tijuana being a well-visited tourist destination that attracts many due to its beaches, bars, and eateries. On Thursday, officials indicated that the attack had only caused damage to a vehicle and that no police officers were hurt.
This drone attack took place only days after reports surfaced of cartel gunmen leaving banners aimed at FBI Director Kash Patel. These banners hinted at threats against U.S. citizens in retaliation for law enforcement actions against criminal organizations, which have been intensified due to pressure from the U.S.
