Are We Outpacing Our Own Evolution?

Think back to the last time you had a day that wasn’t crammed with activities, people, or places to be. Was it just yesterday? Or maybe last week? For many, the pace of modern life is relentless.

A new study published in Behavioral Sciences by social scientists from Singapore analyzes various studies and theories to propose an interesting argument: our quick advancement as a society has outstripped our bodies and minds’ ability to adapt.

The core idea here is that humans have evolved to function in small, familiar groups, responding to immediate threats. Today, however, we are confronted with vast networks of relationships, constant connectivity, and overlapping pressures that foster a feeling of competition.

This disconnect, referred to as an “evolutionary mismatch,” may be contributing to significant physical and mental health issues, ranging from obesity to heightened anxiety.

“Stress, loneliness, and anxiety are often seen as individual problems, but they might also be a reflection of a mismatch between our environments and the conditions our minds and bodies were built to handle,” remarks environmental psychologist Sarah Chan from the Singapore University of Technology and Design.

She notes that we should consider not just personal resilience but also how our urban and social environments are structured.

The research highlights that our instinctive responses, shaped by countless years of evolution, often falter in today’s fast-paced world, which has evolved dramatically in just a few centuries.

Take the internet, for example. It alters how we gauge our social status. No longer do we compare ourselves to just a handful of close friends; now we are inundated with comparisons to a broad array of acquaintances, celebrities, and even strangers online.

“While competition isn’t a novel concept, modern life can make it feel unending,” explains research psychologist Jose Yong from James Cook University in Singapore.

“An evolutionary viewpoint might illuminate why individuals react strongly to comparisons and the fear of falling behind, even when these comparisons come from people they don’t know.”

Then, there’s the added layer of challenges like climate change, pandemics, economic fluctuations, and rapid technological progress, termed a “polycrisis” by the researchers.

“These events—ranging from global crises to their social impacts—appear to influence one another, exacerbating their effects,” they state in the published work.

The researchers elaborate that rising living costs and increasing economic inequality, worsened by financial downturns and crises like the COVID-19 pandemic, amplify financial and social insecurities. This creates cycles that can lead to burnout, diminished social cooperation, and further insecurities, intensifying societal competition and contributing to economic stagnation.

Previous research supports this idea, suggesting that living in crowded urban environments makes individuals feel as though they’re constantly under threat, and that contemporary culture is outpacing environmental factors that shape our evolution.

The researchers have introduced the Social Evolutionary Mismatch and Competition Hypothesis (SEMCH) and believe that understanding this framework could aid in addressing many of today’s psychological issues.

Additionally, this has implications for how cities and urban spaces are designed. They could be structured to feel less congested and overwhelming, perhaps utilizing natural spaces and greenery as starting points.

This notion also translates to the digital realm. While the researchers don’t advocate rolling back digital advancements, they suggest that digital environments should be created to minimize competition rather than foster it.

The next step, according to the researchers, is to test these ideas in real-world scenarios to see how our surroundings affect our well-being.

“We need to craft interventions that work with, not against, our inherent human nature,” Yong adds.
