Contractor for the CIA Taken Into Custody After Reportedly Disclosing Country's ‘Most Secret Information’ to a Romantic Partner for Publication

A contractor for the U.S. government was taken into custody Friday morning on allegations of leaking classified information to a romantic partner.

Ian Brinksman, a 42-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., was arrested by the FBI for reportedly disclosing national defense information to a woman who intended to share it through her Substack newsletter, according to a Friday statement from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). The agency’s press release emphasized the seriousness of the allegations.

The DOJ did not provide an immediate response to inquiries from the Daily Caller News Foundation.

“The FBI apprehended the individual after he was caught allegedly betraying his duty and leaking sensitive defense information,” stated FBI Director Kash Patel in the release. “Safeguarding America’s secrets is a major counterintelligence objective for the FBI, and those who misuse their position of trust and compromise national security will face severe consequences.”

John Ratcliffe, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), confirmed that Brinksman provided contractor services for the CIA.

Ratcliffe further remarked that unauthorized disclosure of classified information poses significant threats to national security, intelligence operations, and personnel. “We have a zero-tolerance policy regarding leaks; any breach of trust will be met with accountability and fullest legal action,” he stated.

According to a criminal complaint, Brinksman began working for a U.S. government agency in the Eastern District of Virginia in 2020 and transitioned to a contractor role with that agency in 2022, focusing on systems integration while holding a Top Secret security clearance.

As of the time this report was created, Brinksman’s LinkedIn profile indicated he had served as a foreign service officer for the U.S. Department of State starting in February 2020 and had joined Deloitte as a senior strategy consultant in August 2022. It also listed him as an intelligence officer for the U.S. Navy since March 2020.

In November 2025, Brinksman began a relationship with a woman, believed to be a journalist who had launched a Substack account covering topics like Congress and political economy. Notably, she remarked on her page, “I also accept leaks,” as mentioned in the affidavit. Allegations suggest he contributed to five articles she authored between March 11 and October 5, which included highly classified information.

Brinksman has been charged under the Espionage Act, facing a potential sentence of up to ten years in prison if found guilty.
