Angel Hernández, a longtime Major League Baseball umpire, is known for having a relatively low tolerance for criticism.
Hernandez’s short fuse was on full display during Friday’s spring training game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Washington Nationals, when he twice ejected pitcher Lance Lynn.
Lin, making his spring training debut, appeared to have trouble with Hernandez’s strike zone in the third inning. The referee ejected the right-hander from the exhibition game.

According to MLB.com writer John Denton’s post on X, Lin said Hernandez “started squealing in the (Cardinals’) dugout, so I told him, ‘They know it’s a strike.’ “I said,” he said. He said to me, “Let’s go!” And I said to him, “He has five seconds left on the pitch clock, so he’ll start whenever he feels like it.”…I threw the next pitch and I thought, “Strike!” . And it was, “See you later.”
In a bit of an unusual move, Lin apparently decided to go to the Cardinals’ bullpen for a little more work.

Manager Hernandez was not satisfied with Lin’s unconventional approach and decided to eject the pitcher for a second time and cut the bullpen session short.

Lin pitched two innings, allowing four runs on three hits and three walks. He threw 25 of his 44 pitches for strikes and had two strikeouts.
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol was also ejected. Lin waved to the crowd as they walked along the outfield toward the clubhouse.

Lin helped the Cardinals win the World Series as a rookie in 2011 and played his first six seasons in the major leagues with the team that drafted him. He played for five other teams over the past six years before re-signing with St. Louis in November.

Hernandez, who was hired as a major league umpire in 1993, has been at times controversial on the field. In Game 3 of the 2018 American League Division Series between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, calls at first base were overturned three times by video review.
Hernandez sparked controversy last September when he ejected Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper from a game. Harper then became emotional and threw his helmet into the stands.
