Cooper Flagg Makes NBA History in Loss

Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg achieved a remarkable feat on Monday night, scoring 42 points in an overtime loss against the Utah Jazz, with a final score of 140-133. This impressive performance marked him as the highest-scoring 18-year-old in NBA history, breaking the record previously set by LeBron James back in December 2003.

However, Flagg was more concerned about the loss than his record-breaking night. “Obviously, we didn’t win, so it’s hard for me to want to be happy or anything like that, but obviously it’s a success,” he reflected.

He also became only the fifth rookie in 15 years to achieve at least 40 points, along with five rebounds and five assists, finishing the game with seven rebounds and six assists to boot.

“I’m proud of this fourth quarter because we’ve come a long way since the start of the season,” Flagg noted. “It’s a new game…but I’m getting more and more comfortable…and to be honest, I’ve settled into a place where I’m just being myself and letting the game come to me.”

Flagg had previously made headlines last month by becoming the youngest player ever to score 35 points in a game. However, despite his personal achievements, the Mavericks find themselves struggling in the Western Conference with a record of 10 wins and 17 losses.

“I don’t really worry about those things (records). I’m more focused on being out there every day and getting better and helping the team win as many games as possible,” Flagg expressed, emphasizing a team-first mindset.

As for the Jazz, they currently hold a 10-15 record, placing them 10th in the conference standings. Keyontae George led the Jazz in scoring with 37 points, while Lauri Markkanen contributed 33 points and 16 rebounds.
