Cooper Flag Debuts at NBA Summer League
Cooper Flag made an impression during his debut at the NBA Summer League, going head-to-head with Bronnie James, the son of the league’s current superstar. Their first matchup ended with Flag leading his team to an 87-85 victory over James’s squad.
In a tense moment, Bronnie James had a chance to win the game but missed a key shot in the closing seconds, allowing Flagg and the Mavericks to secure the win. Despite struggling with his shooting— Flag scored only 10 points on 21 attempts—he did manage to grab six rebounds, dish out four assists, and contribute defensively with three steals and a block over 32 minutes. Notably, he made a spectacular coast-to-coast slam dunk for his first points.
“I really couldn’t get into a rhythm,” Flag admitted after the game. “The environment is so different—definitely not like college. It’s probably not what the real NBA will feel like either.” He expressed gratitude for the confidence his coaches have in him, remarking on their encouragement to try new things during the game.
Flag, reflecting on his performance, noted, “It might have been one of my worst games ever, but at the end of the day, winning is what matters most.”
On the flip side, James, who seemed to have some ups and downs throughout the game, scored eight points along with two rebounds and two assists. He even connected on a three-pointer to give the Lakers an early lead.
Despite some nerves, Flag found excitement in the atmosphere, sharing, “It’s a new environment, a lot of new fans and so on. I’m just trying to enjoy the moment.”
James was picked 55th by USC in last year’s NBA Draft, while Flag joined the Mavericks just weeks ago. It seems both players have bright futures ahead—especially if they keep up this kind of competitive spirit.
