Copa by the numbers: Argentina vs. Canada

Sure, it’s already been done, but now’s the perfect time to do it again.

Argentina will face Canada in the Copa America semifinals on Tuesday (8 p.m., FS1, Univision), marking the second time the two countries have met in the tournament this year.

It was Argentina who celebrated a 2-0 victory at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on June 20. Now Canada is looking to tie the all-time score and reach a Copa America final, becoming just the second CONCACAF nation in the tournament’s history to do so.

When the two teams kick off at MetLife Stadium on Tuesday, it will mean a lot to both teams. For the Argentine side, it is a chance to defend their Copa title and play as continental champions and world champions after winning the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022.

For Canada, this is a chance to reach a major final and prove that hiring American coach Jesse Marsh was a serious decision and not an afterthought for a nation hoping to become an emerging power in CONCACAF.

Ahead of the match, let’s take a look at the numerical outlook for both teams and what a win would mean for both teams.

1: Canada has only lost one game in this year’s tournament, a 2-0 loss to Argentina in their opening match in Group A. Since then, they have won two and drawn one.

2: If Canada wins, they will become just the second CONCACAF country to reach a Copa America final (Mexico reached the final in 2001, where they lost to Colombia).

3: The number of times Chilean referee Piero Mesa has officiated Argentina matches. Both of his matches – a 1-0 win against Brazil in a FIFA World Cup qualifier and a 3-0 win against Italy in a friendly – were victorious.

Four: The number of goals Canada has conceded in the second half in this tournament. Canada has allowed one goal in the second half in their previous nine appearances and has only scored once.

Five: The number of times Argentina has reached consecutive Copa America semi-finals. Their only loss in the last five was to Brazil in 2019.

9: Argentina’s Copa America winning streak. Here’s a quick “Did you know?” question: Argentina hasn’t lost a major tournament match in the United States since the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

250: The cheapest tickets for this game on Ticketmaster have already been resold. That price will get you any seat on the 300th floor (the top floor) of the stadium. Want to sit in the front row? We found four seats in the front row in section 112, but they’ll cost you $3,400 a seat, plus fees, of course.

1959: This was the first time Argentina had gone into a Copa America final as the defending champions, and they could repeat the feat with a win over Canada on Tuesday.
