Copeland and Christian Cage break 25-year title drought in I Quit match

AEW Double or Nothing: A Historic Win for Copeland and Cage

In a thrilling match at AEW’s Double or Nothing event on Sunday, Adam Copeland and Christian Cage secured the tag team championship, marking their first title win in 25 years.

Competing against Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler, the fight was nothing short of brutal. Ladders, various implements, and even a flaming table were all part of the chaotic spectacle. As tensions rose, none of the four wrestlers showed any signs of wanting to end the clash. Throughout the match, Cage endured significant blows to his arm, while Wheeler faced a near injury as part of his nose was barely missed. Barbed wire added to the carnage, slicing through the skin of each fighter involved.

Involved in the mayhem was Stokely Hathaway, the voice for FTR. However, the stakes shifted when Beth Copeland, previously known as Beth Phoenix, made a surprise appearance to help her husband. Yet, her involvement was short-lived as she was quickly taken out of the equation.

During the match, Harwood ignited a table with lighter fluid while Wheeler prepared to launch an attack on Beth. In a surprising twist, Hathaway was at the forefront just as Wheeler charged, resulting in him crashing through the fiery table instead.

Shortly after, Copeland and Cage ganged up on Harwood, employing multiple submission techniques to overpower him. Meanwhile, Beth handed a barbed bat to Adam, intensifying Harwood’s predicament. Eventually, Harwood muttered the ominous words “I quit,” which handed the championship to Copeland and Cage.

Both athletes share a legendary history in WWE, where they collectively won seven tag titles. However, since their transition to AEW, neither had tasted championship success until now. After a lengthy 25-year wait, they’re finally back at the pinnacle of the tag team scene.

The last time Copeland and Cage held tag team championships was in April 2001, when they triumphed in a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match at WrestleMania X-7, only to lose their titles to Kane and The Undertaker shortly after.
