Tragic Death of Coral Springs Deputy Mayor

A city leader in South Florida was discovered dead at her residence, and her husband is now in police custody, authorities reported on Wednesday.

Nancy Metayer Bowen, the Deputy Mayor of Coral Springs, was found by officers around 10 a.m. after they conducted a welfare check, as stated by Police Chief Brad Mock. The investigation is being treated as a potential domestic violence case, though no specific details about her death have been shared. Chief Mock confirmed that Stephen Bowen, her husband, is currently in custody.

No additional suspects are being pursued at this time, according to the chief.

Nancy Bowen was first elected to the Coral Springs City Commission in 2020, and she was re-elected earlier this year in 2024. In November, she was appointed to a second one-year term as deputy mayor, as noted on the city’s official website.

Before her political career, Bowen had a background as an environmental scientist and worked for the Broward County Soil and Water Conservation District. Her family took to social media to confirm her death.

“Throughout her years in public service, she performed her work with integrity, compassion and an unwavering sense of purpose,” her family expressed in a statement. “She believed in uniting people, listening to those she served, and diligently created positive changes in the community. For us, she was a source of strength, wisdom, and love, always putting others before herself.”

The Coral Springs Government’s Facebook page honored Bowen, highlighting her compassion, strength, and dedication. “Her absence creates a significant void in our community,” they noted. The statement encouraged residents to keep her family and friends in their thoughts during this challenging time.

Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frost (D-Fla.) expressed his sadness at Bowen’s passing, remembering her as a relentless advocate and a devoted leader for the community.

Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried reflected on her recent interaction with Bowen, saying, “I never thought that our hug would be our last moment together. Nancy was a friend to so many, and her absence will surely be felt.” She emphasized that Bowen’s commitment to democracy was inspiring and brightened the world around her.
