Giants’ Confidence in Cordale Flott Pays Off
The Giants placed their trust in Cordale Flott, and he delivered in a big way.
Flott, who played the entire game instead of sharing time with Deonte Banks, jumped a route and returned a crucial interception 68 yards in the fourth quarter. This play might just be the turning point in the Giants’ 34-17 win over the Eagles.
“That was a dagger,” said Brian Burns from the Edge.
With the Eagles down 27-17 and 11:36 remaining, they had a chance for a comeback with a second-and-10 at the Giants’ 15-yard line.
There was still time on the clock.
Defensive coordinator Shane Bowen called for Cover Zero, and Flott had recognized from film study that Jahan Dotson would be the target.
Interestingly, Jalen Hurts hadn’t thrown an interception all season long.
“We had to make the call, knowing it could be a huge play,” Flott noted. “I figured they wanted a quick out, so I just went for it.”
Safety Tyler Nubin added, “You know how tough that is? That was one of the best plays I’ve ever seen.” It’s just a game, but still.
Flott had consistently outperformed Banks this season and earned his spot as the Giants’ No. 2 perimeter cornerback as early as spring.
However, the team still found ways to rotate Banks into the mix, often putting him in for crucial third-and-long situations. This was perhaps to justify Banks’ first-round pick status or to save Flott’s legs, given his past foot injuries.
That strategy changed after Banks committed his fourth penalty in just 100 defensive snaps against the Saints, allowing Flott to shine.
“I delivered when the team needed me,” Flott said. “I was confident going in. I’m grateful for the chance and knew I had to capitalize. It was about proving myself to the defense and coaching staff.”
The young player, a third-round pick from 2022, had faced challenges earning a permanent role. His adaptability sometimes worked against him, frequently having to move between positions and facing injuries along the way.
“This is the opportunity I’ve been waiting for,” Flott added. “I just snatched it out of the air.”
In a moment of excitement, Flott thought he had scored a touchdown before being tackled by former teammate Saquon Barkley.
But the interception led to a touchdown for Cam Skatebo, which was ultimately what mattered.
“Saquon is faster than I anticipated,” Flott commented. “I never realized how quick he is. I wish I could borrow some of his speed!”
