Cornel West Critiques Gavin Newsom’s Remarks on SAT Scores
Cornel West, a former presidential candidate and Harvard professor, has taken aim at California Governor Gavin Newsom over his comments regarding SAT scores. This critique arose during an event in Atlanta where Newsom was addressing a largely black audience.
In a podcast interview, West remarked, “When I think of a black man, I think of his low SAT scores.” He shared this clip on his X account, seemingly underscoring a serious point about racial perceptions.
He expressed his frustration, asserting, “That idea is at the core of white supremacy: the belief that black people are less beautiful, less morally, less intelligent. Stop toying with us like Governor @CA.”
Newsom’s controversial remarks came during an event to promote his memoir, “Youth in a Hurry,” where he shared his SAT scores while conversing with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens. His mention of having high scores sparked accusations of racism.
West further commented on how Newsom could have approached the situation more thoughtfully, suggesting a more relatable tone. He noted that dwelling on SAT scores instead of shared human experiences was not the right way to connect.
In Newsom’s defense, he insisted he wasn’t trying to undermine his audience, stating, “I’m not trying to impress you. I’m just trying to impress on you, ‘I’m like you. I’m not better than you.’ I’m a 960 SAT person.”
He explained how his struggles with dyslexia impacted his communication and performance, emphasizing his relatability. But in defending his remarks, he also fired back at Fox News commentator Sean Hannity in a passionate response about being labeled a racist for discussing his academic history.
His office worked to clarify his comments, indicating that he had openly discussed his dyslexia before and had been mocked for it by some in the past. The spokesperson pointed out that Newsom’s statements were not new and had been shared publicly numerous times.
Despite these clarifications, many politicians and public figures have criticized Newsom, including notable figures such as Sen. Tim Scott and rapper Nicki Minaj.
