Cornyn and Casar argue about TSA funding at a food delivery event in the airport

Sen. Cornyn Criticizes Democrats Over TSA Funding Standoff

Senator John Cornyn from Texas expressed his discontent with Democrats during an appearance on Fox News, accusing them of essentially holding Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials “hostage.” This remark came amid a prolonged standoff regarding funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which has now entered its second month.

In the midst of this shutdown, the Texas Republican Party targeted Representative Greg Cassar, a Democrat from Texas. Cornyn remarked on “American Report” about Cassar’s previous actions while on the Austin City Council, suggesting he had previously been instrumental in defunding police. “He shows no respect for law enforcement—including TSA agents, who are vital for our safety at airports,” Cornyn stated.

These comments followed a tense interaction at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, where Cornyn was delivering food from Whataburger to TSA agents who were affected by delayed paychecks. During his arrival, Cassar was also speaking to reporters. An argument ensued when Cassar asked Cornyn to endorse a bill funding only the TSA, which Cornyn deemed “unacceptable,” insisting that Democrats should back the complete DHS funding package instead.

Lawmakers have been deadlocked over the funding since mid-February. While Democrats have pushed for reforms within Immigration and Customs Enforcement, they are reluctant to vote on the entire spending bill. Instead, they are proposing alternatives to fund specific parts of the DHS.

However, Cornyn and several other Republicans argue that these proposals fall short of what’s necessary. He highlighted the essential role of the DHS in preventing terrorism, referencing a recent violent attack in downtown Austin as a reminder of the stakes involved. “It’s really shameful not to pay these TSA agents. There’s no excuse for that,” he lamented.

During his confrontation with Cassar, Cornyn claimed to have voted multiple times to end the DHS shutdown and called out Congressional Democrats for delaying the funding bill. In response, Cassar suggested that only the TSA employees should be compensated.

“They’re trying to make a political statement while ignoring the real people affected,” Cornyn remarked. “This tactic is completely unacceptable.” The ongoing funding crisis comes just as airports brace for a surge in travel, particularly as students head out for spring break.

This situation has reignited discussions around the complexities and implications of federal funding in light of recent incidents involving immigration enforcement that have resulted in loss of life.
