Coroner says autopsy results unclear for newborn discovered in athlete's closet

Investigation into Newborn’s Death Continues

On Wednesday, the coroner disclosed that determining the cause of death for a newborn, allegedly concealed in a closet by a University of Kentucky student-athlete, remains critical.

The Fayette County Coroner’s Office in Lexington, Kentucky, announced that while the autopsy of the male infant has been completed, its findings are inconclusive. An extensive microscopic analysis is necessary to fully ascertain the manner and cause of death.

Raiken Snelling, 21, the toddler’s mother, was arrested Sunday after the baby was discovered dead, wrapped in a towel and placed inside a garbage bag, reportedly located in the closet.

According to reports, Snelling, a senior at the university, faces several charges including tampering with physical evidence, concealing the birth of the infant, and abuse of a corpse. A spokesperson for the university confirmed that Snelling is part of the school’s stunt team, described as a competitive event emphasizing technical skills.

Police indicated that she admitted to giving birth, as documented in the arrest records. Following her arrest, Snelling was released on a $100,000 bond and is now under house arrest. In court on Tuesday, she entered a plea of not guilty.

Coroner Gary Ginn expressed his awareness of community concerns, noting that this tragic event affects many lives, not just locally but also in the greater region. He emphasized that a comprehensive investigation is underway, with all pertinent details being examined. Results from further tests are still pending.

The Lexington Police Department has a special victims unit that continues to work on this investigation.
