Stacey Abrams’ Voter Turnout Groups Disbanded Amid Scandal

Over ten years back, Stacey Abrams, who ran unsuccessfully for governor, set up two organizations aimed at boosting voter registration among predominantly Democratic nonwhite voters in Georgia.

The groups, known as the New Georgia Project and the New Georgia Project Action Fund, were highlighted in recent reports. These organizations reportedly registered hundreds of thousands of voters and contributed significantly to Georgia’s Democratic shift in the 2020 presidential election.

However, the New Georgia Project faced serious allegations of corruption and was ultimately disbanded.

Some critics noted, “This is just one fewer means for Stacey Abrams to profit from people’s contributions.”

The NGP and its Action Fund were involved in questionable activities, including a troubling partnership with a figure accused of domestic terrorism in 2023. They were also hit with a hefty $300,000 fine from the Georgia Ethics Commission for undermining election integrity measures—a record for the commission.

Abrams departed from the organization in 2017, which later confessed to breaching state laws by funneling donations to her 2018 gubernatorial campaign disguised as a nonpartisan effort.

The Ethics Committee discovered that the New Georgia Project failed to report over $4.2 million in donations and $3.2 million in expenditures during the 2018 election cycle. They have recommended that the IRS revoke the group’s tax-exempt status.

In light of the findings, it’s evident that Abrams’ organization couldn’t sustain itself amidst these legal troubles.

Recently, both organizations announced their official disbandment. Despite the serious legal violations, the board maintained that they were proud of their past achievements and the communities they had impacted.

James Woodall, chairman of the NGP Action Fund, described the closure as “challenging” and urged supporters to remain steadfast in their activism.

In a statement reflecting on the disbandment, a spokesperson for Georgia Governor Brian Kemp remarked, “Now, Georgians can be relieved knowing there’s one less avenue for Stacey Abrams to exploit.”

Efforts to obtain comments from Abrams and Senator Raphael Warnock were initiated but remain outstanding.
