A video of a Costco customer returning a sofa he bought more than two years ago has gone viral, sparking debate about the wholesale retailer’s return policy and whether customers are abusing it.
A woman named Jackie revealed that she bought a sofa from Costco more than two-and-a-half years ago in a video posted to TikTok last week that has garnered about 3 million views.
Jackie admits she was nervous returning large items to the warehouse store and was afraid of the stares other shoppers would make while waiting in line.
“But who cares? Give it back. They have a great return policy,” she tells her followers. “Buy your furniture at Costco, girl. If you don’t like it, just return it.”

“Simply bring your item to a Costco warehouse and our Member Services team will be happy to assist you. It will be helpful if you have your receipt and the product’s original packaging, but you may not need to complete the return process.”Return Policy is stated.
The company’s policy does not specify that most items must be returned within a certain time frame or in a certain condition.
There are exceptions for electronics, jewelry, tobacco, alcohol, car tires and batteries, airline tickets, gold, and special orders.
The couch-returning video sparked some backlash on TikTok, with some Costco customers accusing the woman of taking advantage of the policy.
“That’s just not true,” one woman responded. “She used something and the kids and the animals and the whole family loved it and she used it for two and a half years, just because it was there.” [a] There is a small loophole in this store’s policy, so do you think it’s morally right to take back a used sofa that’s in good condition and get a full refund? ”
Her reaction video garnered more than 15,000 comments and nearly 2 million views. Top commenters seem to agree that this is an abuse of liberal store return policies.
“You’re not wrong. People are abusing Costco’s great return policy,” said one top comment.
“I work at Costco. Don’t even get me started,” another top commenter said.
But others came to Jackie’s defense, arguing that the company’s best-in-class customer satisfaction policies allowed such returns.
“My husband works at Costco and he says Costco takes money from every item returned. I have no shame in returning items,” one person wrote .
Another TikToker named Brittany argued that wholesale retailers can have more generous return policies than other retailers because they make most of their revenue from membership fees.
“They’re multi-billion dollar companies. The amount of returns they get probably doesn’t affect the amount of profits they’re making, so it’s not that big of a deal. Do they really care that much about the money they make? We are literally all poor compared to them. We need to appreciate the value of money and get it back if possible. Yes,” she said. “I would do the exact same thing.”
Last year, a Costco return video of a customer returning a two-year-old mattress and using the money for a new mattress went viral on TikTok.
Costco Wholesale did not respond to a request for comment.
