Costco Dubai chocolate sparks potential pistachio shortage

Dubai chocolate has become the latest trendy craving for people with sweet teeth.

The sweet and salty dessert comes from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), inspired by a Middle Eastern dessert called Nafe.

The original thick milk chocolate bar is filled with pistachio cream and kataifi.

Vehera posted a video of herself trying out Dubai Chocolate Bars in December 2023 from Dessert Chocolatier, which first launched its product in 2021.

The post goes viral and has accumulated over 124 million views and nearly 7 million preferences to date, with a wide range of public interest.

Since then, Dubai Chocolate has expanded into the US all over the world.

The restaurant offers inspired menu items such as strawberries covered in Dubai chocolate, while brands such as Costco sell Dubai chocolate products.

Ghirardelli recently unveiled a limited Dubai Chocolate Sunday at some stores.

As the outbreak continues, industry experts warn that it is causing a global pistachio shortage, according to reports Financial Times last week.

Giles Hacking, a London-based nut trader CG hack, told the publication that pistachio prices have skyrocketed from $7.65 per pound last year to $10.30 per pound.

“The pistachio world is basically tapped at this point,” Hacking said.

The US is a globally major exporter of pistachios, but hacking reported that the strain has declined since “last year’s unfortunate harvest.”

The quality of the nuts was also higher than usual, and prices increased.

According to the Pistachios Management Committee, California’s pistachio supply fell by up to 20% in the 12 months to February 2025.

According to Iran’s customs data, Iran, the world’s second largest pistachio producer, exported 40% more nuts to the UAE from September 2024 to March 2025.

Previous supply inflows in 2023 caused various pistachio by-products such as butter, oils and pastes.
