Zach Bryan’s New Song About ICE Faces Backlash
Country artist Zach Bryan has stirred up controversy in Nashville with his latest song, “Bad News,” which takes aim at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He shared a snippet of the song on Instagram, and its lyrics are quite pointed regarding ICE’s actions during the Trump administration.
The lyrics include lines like, “All my friends are decadent, but they’re all I got. A generational story of conspiracy-busting,” which seem to reflect deep frustrations. He goes on to mention, “And ICE is going to break down your door, building a house that no one’s going to build anymore, but I have a phone, and the kids are all scared and alone.”
Some figures in country music have expressed their disapproval of Bryan’s politically charged lyrics. Singer Buddy Brown criticized Bryan not just for his music but also alluded to his previous arrests, comparing him to The Chicks, who faced a backlash for voicing their political views in the past. He remarked, “For true country fans, it’s getting harder and harder to defend him.”
Brown noted Bryan’s past incidents and questioned his motives, suggesting that he might be seeking sponsorship from brands like Bud Light. “It’s as if he’s trying too hard,” he said.
In contrast, some social media users have commended Bryan for what they see as bravery in addressing such hot-button issues through his music. Critics have labeled this situation Bryan’s “Bud Light moment,” drawing parallels to the backlash that the beer company faced after partnering with a transgender influencer earlier this year.
Lee Greenwood, known for his patriotic song “God Bless the USA,” responded to Bryan’s song by reflecting on how his own work aimed to unite people rather than divide. He pointed out that he has always tried to foster a sense of togetherness, especially during moments of national crisis.
John Rich also weighed in, suggesting that Bryan’s approach might alienate him from traditional country music fans. He implied that Bryan is possibly trying to connect with a niche audience within the genre. “Zach Bryan has every right to record songs bashing law enforcement,” he stated, though he acknowledged that fans may choose to support him or not based on these new directions.
In light of the backlash, Bryan issued a statement defending his song, asserting that it stems from his love for the country. He mentioned the divisiveness often seen in social media narratives and urged for understanding across the political spectrum. “We need to find a way back,” he emphasized.
The debate continues as fans and artists alike share their views on Bryan’s direction in music. Some stand firmly with traditional patriotic themes, while others are intrigued by the new, controversial path he’s taking.
