Country Singer Zach Bryan Clarifies Controversy, Claims Message in Anti-ICE Song is Being 'Misunderstood'

Zach Bryan Addresses Backlash Over New Song

Country star Zach Bryan recently expressed that the negative perception of his latest song, “Bad News,” particularly its anti-ICE theme, has been “misunderstood” on social media.

The track gained significant attention over the weekend, especially for its poetic criticisms of Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The lyrics include a poignant reflection on the fear faced by children and the societal divisions that are hard to ignore.

And then the ice comes and closes your door
Try building a house No one will build it anymore
But I got the phone
All the kids are scared and alone
The boss stopped bumping, and the rock stopped rolling.
The middle finger will rise and will not stop displaying
There was bad news
Red, white, blue fades

In an Instagram story shared on Tuesday, Bryan described the social media reactions as “not only embarrassing, but also scary.” He clarified, “I served this country. I love this country, and the song itself is about us all coming out of this divided space. I wasn’t talking about politicians or anything more significant than just confusion. I’m just a 29-year-old man who finds himself just as puzzled as everyone else.”

He further mentioned that the complete version of the song addresses issues from various viewpoints, saying the backlash reflects just how sharply divided society has become.

A representative from the Department of Homeland Security suggested that country artists should focus on themes of national pride instead. Meanwhile, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson humorously played off Bryan’s song title in a response.

Jackson commented on social media, likening Bryan to someone who supports illegal immigration while criticizing ICE officers, hinting at the complexities in his public persona. This follows a history of Bryan being photographed with Trump, although he previously mentioned that he doesn’t align completely with either major political figure.

“I don’t support Trump or Biden, but the guy was shot with his ears, his head, whatever you want to call it,” he remarked in a past video.
