“At approximately 8:30 p.m., the couple was surrounded by teenagers at the intersection of Grand Avenue and McClurg Court, who kicked, stomped and punched them multiple times,” according to the report.
Nina did not appear on camera, but photos were provided to local news outlets during an interview showing her hair pulled out and a wound to her eye. Her husband was also allegedly held down and assaulted by the boys.
Nina told the outlet that the attack was not a robbery, but that the teenagers had pepper sprayed her and kicked her in the stomach. She was two weeks pregnant at the time and learned she had lost her baby after the beatings, according to the report.
“We believe in faith and it wasn’t meant to happen so we don’t know why this happened to us,” Nina said.
Chicago police responded to the scene and arrested a 14-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl, both of whom reportedly have been charged with misdemeanor assault.
“They didn’t steal anything. They said, ‘These streets are ours. They belong to us. You can’t walk around here.’ I was wearing a nice dress and high heels. I was on a date with my husband and they dragged my dress along the ground and said, ‘These streets are ours. You can’t walk around here hopping around in your little dress.’ They were saying things that didn’t make any sense to me because they don’t know me personally,” Nina said.
Chicago police said they were investigating the attack, and the outlet reached out to the Cook County Attorney’s Office about whether additional charges were pending but had not responded by press time.
