Couple Peter and Barbie Reynolds freed by the Taliban in Afghanistan

An elderly British couple was freed by the Taliban this week after spending eight months in captivity. Barbie Reynolds, 76, and her husband, Peter Reynolds, 80, arrived in Qatar on Friday following extensive negotiations involving Qatar, the Taliban, and the UK.

The couple had lived in Afghanistan for 18 years, during which they operated an educational charity. Remarkably, despite their incarceration, Barbie expressed a desire to return to Afghanistan, as they are both Afghan citizens. “As they say in Afghanistan, God is good,” she remarked upon arriving at Kabul airport.

Detained since February, the couple met with relatives, including their daughter, Sarah Entwistle, when they reached Doha. Sarah was visibly emotional, thanking reporters in Arabic for the return of her parents, saying, “Thank you for giving back my family.”

In a heartfelt statement, she added, “We will forever thank the governments of Qatar and the UK for standing with us during this difficult time.” She emphasized the significant role of diplomacy and international cooperation in this situation.

Jonathan Reynolds, their son, mentioned during an interview with Sky News from the US that while Qatar ensured the couple had access to doctors and medications, he feared their health might still have declined during their captivity.

United Nations health experts have warned that imprisoned individuals can suffer serious harm or even death. The family accused the Taliban of mistreatment and demanded explanations for the couple’s detention.

Qatar’s Minister of State, Mohammed bin Abdulaziz al-Klayfi, praised the “frugal cooperation” between the UK and the Taliban that led to the couple’s release. The Taliban, on their part, stated that the couple had breached Afghan laws, but details were not specified.

UK envoy to Afghanistan, Richard Lindsay, expressed gratitude for the reunion, saying, “At least, today is a very wonderful and humane day.” British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer also recognized the significant role Qatar played in facilitating their freedom.

The backdrop of this incident is the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, after which the Taliban regained control of the country.
