Unexpected Birth at Burning Man
A baby girl, named Aurora, was born unexpectedly at the Burning Man festival, a joyful yet chaotic time for her parents who were unaware they were expecting. Kayla Thompson, 36, noted that she had no signs of pregnancy before the premature arrival of her daughter, who is currently under care in a Reno NICU.
“It’s a complete miracle,” said Casey Thompson, the father, 39, from Salt Lake City. He expressed disbelief about the situation, adding, “Did I know about the pregnancy? That’s the last place I would have thought it would happen.”
On Wednesday, while at the festival, Kayla experienced acute abdominal pain, which turned into labor, culminating in the birth of Aurora inside the couple’s RV parked in the Nevada desert. Casey recounted the moment, filled with emotion, saying, “I cried out for help.” He added, “Suddenly, medical staff appeared. I have no idea where they came from, but they were just there.”
The couple’s daughter was quickly transported by helicopter to a neonatal intensive care unit about 120 miles away in Reno. However, there wasn’t space for the parents aboard the helicopter, leading them to trust their newborn to the festival’s medical team. “The staff reassured me. They kept saying they wouldn’t let her out of their sight,” Kasey shared.
After giving birth, Kayla was admitted to the same hospital and was discharged the following day. She recalled, “Even the nurses at the hospital said, ‘You don’t look pregnant at all,’” highlighting her astonishment at how normal she felt.
Though Aurora remains in the NICU, her parents are grateful for her stable condition and the dramatic way she entered the world. “She’s just lit up my sky,” Casey remarked, adding that she will become central to their lives.
A GoFundMe page has been created by friends and family to help the new parents cover medical and travel expenses. Aurora, who weighed in at 3 pounds, 9.6 ounces and measured 16.5 inches, will stay in the hospital until she is ready to come home, as noted by her family.
