Court Directs Release of Indian Researcher Badar Khan Suri Held for Suspected Hamas Connections

Release of Indian Researcher Facing Deportation

In Washington, a US judge has ordered the release of an Indian researcher affiliated with a prominent American university, who was facing deportation related to alleged ties to Hamas.

Badar Khan Suri, a postdoctoral researcher at Georgetown University, was arrested by federal agents in Texas two months ago at his Virginia residence.

District Judge Patricia Giles mandated Suri’s immediate release, enabling his wife and three children to return from Texas on his behalf.

Suri’s wife, Mapeze Saleha, expressed her relief in a statement, highlighting the importance of free speech and expressing beliefs without fear. “It’s not a crime to talk about what’s going on in Palestine,” she emphasized.

The judge determined that Suri’s detention infringed upon his First Amendment rights, conveying a strong message against unwarranted arrests based on political solidarity with Palestinians.

Suri’s release follows shortly after another judge ordered the release of Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish doctoral student from Tufts University.

Concerns have arisen in the academic community regarding the implications for research and free expression during the Trump administration, evidenced by the arrests of Suri and Ozturk.

Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin claimed that Suri had been disseminating Hamas propaganda and fostering anti-Semitism online. She further alleged connections with individuals suspected to be associated with Hamas.

According to reports, Suri’s wife is the daughter of a former advisor linked to the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Hanie.

McLaughlin indicated that individuals with specific ties may face deportation if their presence is believed to threaten US foreign policy. It’s worth noting that Hamas is categorized as a terrorist organization by the United States.
