Courtney Love Discusses Health Struggles and Upcoming Album
Courtney Love has recently opened up about her long-standing health challenges, which she kept mostly private for several years. The 62-year-old singer, best known for her band Hole, shared some insights into the creation of her upcoming album, revealing that it began taking shape during a time when she faced frequent hospital visits. She expressed concern that this might be her final album.
In a recent interview, Love recounted how her health deteriorated significantly after a trip to England in 2019. “I went to England in 2019, and when I went there, my body exploded,” she stated. “I went to the hospital a lot. I almost died and lost all my hair. I weighed about 100 pounds.” The gravity of her situation was underscored by medical opinions that she might not survive, which she initially found hard to accept.
While she did not disclose the specific illness she faced, Love mentioned that she eventually overcame it by disregarding the bleak projections given to her. This resilience, she insists, is linked to her childhood experiences. She explained, “When I was a kid, I had a habit of interrupting adults,” highlighting a tendency to question what she was told. “They told me red was blue, and I saw blue, but then I started to doubt my own perception. It was a confusing time.” But ultimately, she maintained, “I never really lost the ability to see…red was red. When they said, ‘You’re going to die,’ I just didn’t believe them. Somehow, I got better. I’m healthy, which is great.”
Despite the struggles, Love was clear that she preferred to keep her illness private. “I just didn’t make it public that I was sick. I didn’t want to make it public. I’m fine now,” she reassured.
Reflecting on how music played a crucial role in her recovery, Love expressed a desire to return to touring and performing, emphasizing that her new album stems directly from her experiences during her health battle. She initially approached the album with the belief it could be her last project. “I wanted to give you an update on my record. When I made it, I knew it was my last record, so I made the record I’ve always wanted to make,” she noted, adding that she spent most of her time in hospitals thinking about writing and recording songs.
This upcoming album marks a significant milestone for Love, as she hasn’t released new music since Hole’s “Nobody’s Daughter,” which came out in 2010. She concluded her message by asking her fans for their patience as she gears up for her return to the public eye.
