Cowboys Acquire Joey Porter Jr. Following Contract Dispute With Steelers

Steelers Trade Joey Porter Jr. to Cowboys

This is quite the move from Jerry Jones.

After a lengthy contract dispute and some back issues, Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. has apparently been traded to the Dallas Cowboys.

Pittsburgh struck a deal Wednesday night, sending Porter—who was a second-round pick in 2023—to Dallas in exchange for a sixth-round pick in 2027 and a second-round pick for 2028, as reported by ESPN.

This trade wraps up a saga that’s been unfolding for months, especially as Porter awaited a contract extension while also recovering from his injury.

The tension between Porter and the Steelers reportedly revolved around the guaranteed money in his contract structure. Despite ongoing negotiations that lasted until shortly before Pittsburgh’s Week 1 game against the Atlanta Falcons, no real progress was made. Eventually, the Steelers ended discussions due to their policy against negotiating during the regular season.

Now, enter Jerry Jones, coming in with draft picks in hand to make another headline-grabbing move that he seems to relish.

On the other hand, from the Cowboys’ perspective, they are in desperate need of talent like Joey Porter Jr. Their defense has struggled significantly early in the season, allowing explosive plays, failing to create turnovers, and having difficulty on third downs.

Bringing in a physical cornerback like Porter can provide an immediate boost to their secondary.

So yes, Dallas genuinely needs this trade, but let’s face it—this has Jerry Jones written all over it, and part of the motivation seems to be to attract attention.

I have to say, I admire Jerry’s approach. If you can improve your team and be in the spotlight at the same time, then why not take the chance?

It’s one of those advantages that comes with being a billionaire.
