Cowboys’ CeeDee Lamb laughs at owner Jerry Jones over lack of urgency in contract talks

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb has not attended training camp so far this summer as he negotiates a new contract, and Lamb seems to be downplaying the idea of ​​his absence lasting a little longer.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones updated reporters on Lamb’s contract negotiations Thursday, suggesting they’re not an immediate priority.

“There’s no rush to get it done,” Jones said.

The Cowboys removed star receiver Lamb from the active roster and placed him on the reserve/non-reporting list ahead of their first exhibition game this Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams.

“It’s a business thing,” Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters this week about Lamb’s contract situation. “Everybody understands he’s doing his time right now. When he gets here, we’ll take it. When he gets here, we’ve got to be smart and get him fired up and ready to go.”

Lamb was selected to the Pro Bowl for the third consecutive year and was named All-Pro for the first time in 2023. That season he recorded an NFL-leading 135 receptions for 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns, all career highs.

As for a potential Lamb deal, the wide receiver market underwent a major reset this offseason when Minnesota Vikings star wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who was drafted in the same class as Lamb in 2020, signed a four-year, $140 million contract with $110 million guaranteed.

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown signed a three-year contract extension this year averaging $32 million, while Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra Saint Brown signed his latest contract with an annual salary of $30 million, while Miami Dolphins superstar Tyreek Hill signed a three-year extension on his contract with an annual salary of $30 million.

Lamb is due to receive $17.99 million on his fifth-year option this year.
