Cowboys’ Struggles Prompt Players-Only Meeting

The Dallas Cowboys continued their inconsistent performance in Week 5, suffering a loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and slipping to a 2-3 record. The spotlight has largely fallen on the team’s defense, which has struggled to maintain steady performance during the early part of the season. In light of these challenges, the Cowboys held a players-only meeting.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach and current NFL analyst Mike Tomlin expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of such meetings in the league, but Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer doesn’t interpret the situation as alarming. He believes it shows that “everyone’s rowing in the same direction.”

Schottenheimer shared his thoughts on the matter, stating, “I love it. I’ve said from the very beginning, the best teams I’ve ever been around are led by the locker room.” He mentioned that he received positive feedback from some players about the meeting, describing it as “very productive” and “open and honest.”

Following last Thursday’s defeat to the Buccaneers, linebacker DeMarvion Overshown confirmed that the defensive players convened to evaluate their performance based on the team’s standards. He noted that they tackled issues “by bullet point, bullet point,” identifying areas for improvement.

On Jason and Travis Kelce’s podcast “New Heights,” Tomlin provided a candid view when discussing the topic of players-only meetings. His blunt comment was, “I think you’re dead.” He later clarified that his primary concern lies not in the occurrence of the meeting itself but in the fact that it was made public. “If it did occur, I’d like to not hear about it,” he remarked, adding that the public discussion makes it feel insincere.

Last season, Matt Eberflus served as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator under Schottenheimer before moving to the San Francisco 49ers as assistant head coach/defense. Dallas has now turned to Christian Parker to take charge of the defense, which has shown some improvement but still ranks low in yards allowed per game through the first five weeks.

Following the loss to the Buccaneers, Schottenheimer began making adjustments to a struggling defense. One of the changes includes the hiring of Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant, who has previously collaborated with Parker.

Schottenheimer also confirmed that Parker will not be on the sideline for the Cowboys’ upcoming Week 6 matchup against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. “The pride of that unit is strong,” Schottenheimer said. “There’s some really, really prideful men in that room, and we’re going to get it fixed. I have no question about that. But it doesn’t bother me at all. It means everyone’s rowing in the same direction trying to get this thing fixed.”
