Cowboys Make a Move Before NFL Trade Deadline
The Cowboys haven’t let a tough loss and some pointed comments from a franchise legend sway their plans ahead of the NFL trade deadline.
They are closing in on a deal to bring in Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson. This comes less than half a day after a disappointing home defeat against the Cardinals, pushing the Cowboys to a 3-5-1 record.
Cincinnati will receive a seventh-round pick for Wilson, who sought a trade after seeing less playing time lately.
Wilson’s arrival is crucial for a defense that’s currently giving up 30.8 points per game, which ranks second highest in the league. He still has two years left on his contract.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones mentioned before the game that a deal was lined up, and reports indicated that the trade was possibly discussed during the game. Troy Aikman, a legendary quarterback for Dallas, humorously remarked during the third quarter that the trade might not help much, joking, “I don’t think there’s a single player that’s going to make a difference in this group.”
Jones, at 83, stirred some attention on Monday when he hinted at having a contract ready for Dallas, though he didn’t elaborate on the specifics.
With the team struggling defensively since trading Micah Parsons to the Packers, their defense feels less daunting—kind of like a folding chair against offensive onslaughts.
Dallas isn’t seen as a serious contender with such porous defense. Typically, teams don’t secure impactful players to fix their struggles at the trade deadline. But still, it seems Jones is keen on making moves.
“We certainly made a trade, and we might make a couple more before the deadline,” Jones said on “The Stephen A. Smith Show.” “I’ve got one more in the works, maybe two. I’d like to see you read about them tomorrow when I send in the paperwork.”
However, those additional trades might be put on pause after Monday’s lackluster performance against the Cardinals, who are on a five-game losing streak and started backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett.
During the broadcast, Joe Buck pointed out that Jones had earlier stated one player wouldn’t change much for the team, and the commentary duo seemed to agree on that front.
They reflected on Cincinnati’s defense costing the team a playoff spot, despite the presence of standout pass rusher Trey Hendrickson, who led the league in sacks last season.
“They’re above it defensively right now,” Buck observed about the Cowboys missing a player.
Aikman added that Hendrickson’s presence didn’t alter the outcomes for Cincinnati, which struggled similarly.
The Cowboys obtained Wilson from the Bengals in exchange for Hendrickson.
Wilson, a 2020 third-round pick, registered 19 solo tackles and a fumble recovery this season, although he was relegated from starter status in Week 8 and missed Week 9 due to injury.
Still, he’s been reliable in the past, recording at least 100 tackles in each of the last four years. He agreed to a four-year deal worth up to $37.25 million earlier in 2023. The Cowboys are currently on a bye week, so fans will have to wait for his debut against Dallas.
When the Cowboys return in Week 11, they’ll face the Raiders on “Monday Night Football.”
