Cowboys Make Roster Changes with New Running Back and Quarterback Adjustment

The Cowboys have added a new running back to their roster and made an adjustment to their quarterback lineup.

On Monday, Dallas picked up Emari Demercado off waivers from the Chiefs, which comes as they need depth after releasing Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah the day before. This move also resulted in the team waiving quarterback Joe Milton.

Milton had a solid preseason, completing 29 of 43 passes for 378 yards and throwing three touchdowns, serving as the backup quarterback in 2025.

He was initially traded to Dallas from the Patriots ahead of the 2025 season, after becoming somewhat disgruntled and falling down the depth chart behind Drake Maye and veteran Jacoby Brissett.

Reports suggest that there were some trade talks involving the Cowboys prior to the recent roster cuts.

Before acquiring Demercado, the Cowboys had only one running back, Malik Davis, backing up starters Javonte Williams.

Demercado began his NFL journey with the Cardinals, where he spent three seasons before joining the Chiefs this past offseason.

Throughout his tenure in the NFL, Demercado has carried the ball 126 times for 819 yards and reached the end zone three times, in addition to making 50 receptions for 324 yards and a touchdown.

One moment he might want to forget occurred last season against the Titans. He thought he had scored a touchdown but ended up costing his team significant momentum.

In that game, he dropped the ball just before crossing the goal line, which, instead of giving the Cardinals a commanding lead, allowed the Titans to come back and win by a point.

This error didn’t go unnoticed; it resulted in ex-Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon confronting Demercado, leading to Gannon receiving a hefty $100,000 fine from the organization.
