Alvarez shared the startling footage on Instagram, humorously noting, “Florida is getting out of hand.” In the clip, his dog, Summer, seems to be investigating the unusual foe just before the crab swings its weapon towards her.
In a frantic attempt to rescue his pet, Alvarez tries to catch the crab, which is no easy task. “Summer, where the heck did you find a crab with a freaking shank?” he exclaims in disbelief.
Ultimately, he manages to grab the crab and relocates it deeper into his yard. “Summer, I don’t recommend messing with this,” he cautions.
Alvarez lightheartedly describes the crab as a “gangster-ass crab.” It appears to be a blue land crab, a species common in Florida, typically found within five miles of the coast.
These crabs can have a leg span of up to 12 inches and weigh around a pound. The knife appears to be a pocket-knife, though how this crab came into possession of it remains a mystery.
Since its posting on Wednesday, Alvarez’s video has gone viral with over 20 million views. Reactions have been mixed, with one viewer questioning whether it was more surprising to see a crab with a knife or Alvarez handling it casually as if it were a normal day.
