Cracker Barrel Revives Classic Menu Items

Cracker Barrel is bringing back some beloved favorites to its menu, specifically two classic dishes that many customers have missed.

The well-known Tennessee restaurant chain announced that its Hamburger Steak and Eggs in the Basket will return. They cited “popular demand” as the reason for this revival.

Thomas Yun, Cracker Barrel’s vice president of menu strategy and innovation, mentioned that winter is a time when people crave comfort food, and there’s nothing quite like these classics to provide that. He remarked, “It was a straightforward decision to reintroduce these dishes,” highlighting their status as both a traditional favorite and a popular request from guests.

Hamburger Steak has been part of Cracker Barrel’s offerings since its doors first opened in 1969. It’s described as a juicy, seasoned beef patty topped with a flavorful butter-garlic sauce, served alongside a selection of classic sides.

Similarly, Eggs in the Basket is characterized as a nostalgic breakfast favorite, featuring eggs nestled between two slices of crispy sourdough bread, complemented by bacon or sausage and other classic sides. Both dishes are now part of the Meal for Two Value Deal, available Monday through Friday for $19.99.

Yun expressed excitement about the return of these nostalgic dishes, stating that they are rooted in tradition and cherished by many generations of diners.

Kelly Ferrell, a cookbook author from Atlanta, noted that the comeback of these items signifies a return to Cracker Barrel’s Southern roots. She recalled that the restaurant is often seen as a go-to for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and suggested that they should focus on maintaining their traditional menu.

Ferrell also shared personal memories tied to the hamburger steak, remarking that it evokes nostalgia for her. “Any burger works for me,” she added, illustrating the dish’s universal appeal.

For fans of Cracker Barrel, the revival of Eggs in the Basket has sparked much enthusiasm. Rachel Love, an admirer of the brand from Tennessee, reflected on her feelings of loss when the item was previously removed from the menu. She recounted a visit with a friend when the announcement of its removal hit her hard.

“We were distraught,” she said, emphasizing how simple yet delightful the dish is. She considers it a “Southern staple” that truly merits a comeback.
