Cracker Barrel’s Brand Update Sparks Controversy

Cracker Barrel Old Country Store has been in the spotlight recently, but not for the reasons they might have hoped.

The beloved chain, which has been around for 55 years, has swapped out its well-known logo. The previous design, featuring a man leaning on a barrel and a straightforward layout with just the company’s name, has been replaced.

“The intention is to make it more modern and inclusive, to move away from past associations,” a spokesperson said.

This shift in branding follows a change in the restaurant’s interior that began last year. The new aesthetic ditches the classic country style for something a bit trendier.

However, the announcement has not been well received online, with many critics accusing the restaurant of undergoing a “woke” transformation.

Rep. Byron Donald from Florida shared his own experiences, saying, “I worked at Cracker Barrel in college. I changed my life in their parking lot.” He lamented the change in logo and characterized the restaurant as an iconic part of American culture. “No one wanted this ‘woke’ shift. It’s time to bring back the true Cracker Barrel,” he stated.

Even competitors like Steak ‘N Shake chimed in on social media, claiming that some changes might simply be an attempt to remove character. One post pointed out that the removal of “old timers” from the logo is emblematic of a broader trend.

Reportedly, the company has engaged three marketing agencies for a rebranding effort that is part of a larger $700 million plan. Unfortunately, the backlash has seemingly affected stock performance. The restaurant’s shares dropped nearly 15% on Thursday, translating to a loss of around $194.6 million in market value, although they later recovered some ground by closing down approximately 13.9%.

“Shareholders ought to be upset,” said conservative commentator Robbie Starbuck. He emphasized that “Wokeness destroys businesses,” calling for the CEO to be let go.

Similarly, Glenn Beck voiced skepticism regarding the positive reception of the rebranding. He noted that Cracker Barrel has historically represented nostalgia, something many Americans cherish. “I go there for a taste of home, and this change feels like an attempt to erase that,” he added.
